Hikes near Sedona

The Wonderful Wilson Mountain trails that overlook Sedona were closed in 2006 due to the Brins Fire. They reopened in September, 2007 when their safety had been restored, but the damage remains. If you want to see what it is like, see this forest service page describing Wilson Mountain Trail #10 and North Wilson Trail #123.

Hikes near Tucson

Also in the Tucson vicinity is Kitt Peak National Observatory (KPNO). Their Nightly Observing Program is terrific, even though they had to raise prices due to NSF budget cuts.

Canyoneering

So you want to find a canyon? See here for some ideas of canyons (and so-called canyons) in Arizona: Canyon Standards

Speleunking/Caving

Arizona Cave SurveyA library of Arizona cave information.
Long Caves ListA list of caves over one mile long in the USA.
Peppersauce CavePeppersauce is approximately a two-hour drive from the valley, in the vicinity of Oracle, AZ, it is now the target of a cleanup project. To see an aerial photo of the actual caving area, click here and you can see the road you should park on. Zoom out and scroll up and to the left and you'll see Oracle, AZ. Despite its popularity, maps of the cave are hard to come by. No doubt, it is sometimes dangerous to share too much information, because the cave has been heavily abused by reckless people who lack an appreciation for the motto "leave no trace". One source has reported that the Coronado National Forest office has a 1941 map of Peppersauce. If anyone can attest to the accuracy of that information, please post a comment.

Skiing in Arizona

Arizona skiing doesn't compare to the rest of the West, not even New Mexico, but it is better than much of the skiing on the east coast, and it blows away the Midwest.

There is skiing in the vicinity of Flagstaff, Show Low (east central), and Tucson. Snowbowl in Flagstaff is closest (a day ski trip from Phoenix is feasible), but Sunrise near Show Low has the best skiing.

Mosaic Outdoor Clubs of America MOCA is the network of non-profit organizations dedicated to organizing outdoor, active, and/or environmental activities for Jewish adults. While Arizona Adventurers is not affiliated with Mosaic, we've had some friendly contacts from time to time. Why no affiliation? It has come up in past years, and the short answer is: because the leaders in AZAd see it as more beneficial to focus our limited volunteer energy on local, rather than national relations and because it has kept our cost structure coniderably lower for the quality we get. AZAd handles relatively little money compared to other clubs, and that is the way we like it. That all said, Mosaic is a great organization with some great events on a national scale and we heartily cheer them on. The web sites of a nearby local chapters: Los Angeles (beware annoying popup ads!).

They have both "traditional" and Asian menus (how fitting!). If you eat beef, you have to try the Hickory burger with curly fries. And remember, "Wednesday night is BBQ rib night"!
